German software group SAP has opened in Bucharest an SAP Labs Site, a digital innovation hub that is meant to contribute to expanding the company's portfolio of products and services.
The Bucharest hub is part of the global R&D network SAP Labs Network, which oversees the company's engineering activities. The network has 21 R&D centers in 17 countries, including Germany, the United States, India, China, and Brazil. Each location targets different areas, such as AI, cloud computing, or process automation, among others. More than 40,000 people are employed in the network. "The new SAP Labs Site in Bucharest is an important support for the operations of SAP Romania and will consolidate our expertise and market presence through the growth and development of local talent," said Diana David, managing director of SAP Romania. Norwegian Archer, a global company focused on providing gas and drilling services, as well as handling the clients from oil and gas sector, is opening an engineering office in Gdansk. It will employ 150 engineers who will take part in the development of all the tycoon’s global projects.
Archer has been active in the oil and gas market for more than 40 years. The company currently employs more than 4,500 people in 40 countries around the world. Archer currently secures the engineering side of wells at 35 offshore locations in the North Sea and Atlantic and more than 65 onshore wells in South America. Major clients remain companies such as Equinor, Aker BP and Repsol. Archer’s services cover the entire well completion process – from surface imaging, new well construction to well servicing and, finally, post production quenching and protection. Ambitious plans The Gdansk office will support operations in Europe, North and South America and the Pacific, as well as developing projects in the Middle East and West Africa. The choice of location is not accidental and the company has high hopes for the Polish office: – We are pleased to present our new office – says Piotr Hinczewski, Managing Director and Member of the Board, Archer Poland. – The new premises provide a better working environment for our employees and offer a modern and professional environment to serve our clients. We also expect to attract new talent to the company as we continue to grow and expand our business – adds Piotr Hinczewski. Archer’s Gdansk branch is located in the Alchemia complex in Oliwa. Ultimately, 150 engineers will work in the Gdansk office, specialising in various disciplines: piping design, structural design, calculations, E&I, processing, safety and many others. The distribution of vacancies is planned over a three-year period. It will be the company’s largest engineering office. – We are constantly experiencing a demand for talented engineers. With our new headquarters in Gdansk, we are now equipped to ensure further growth and thus meet the needs of an expanding market – adds Martin Nilsen, Manager Business Development Engineering Global. Significantly, Archer is also already entering the renewable energy market. The company recently purchased a 50% stake in Island Drilling Company with a strategy to develop its geothermal drilling business. In turn, the ambition of the Gdansk office for the next few years will be to expand its services and also serve the offshore wind sector. Development of the offshore sector Archer is another company from the offshore sector, that has recently decided to open a branch in Gdansk. In September, a similar decision was made by Siemens Gamesa, which specializes in providing solutions for wind turbines. Both companies are supported in the relocation process and in terms of employer branding by Invest in Pomerania, a local government initiative coordinated by the Pomerania Development Agency that provides a wide range of services for FDI. – We firmly believe that the offshore industry, be it wind or oil & gas, alongside the automotive and electronics sectors, will soon be the most growth-oriented direction for Pomeranian industry. The presence of corporations such as Archer represents a development opportunity for the entire region. We know that we have a highly competent workforce, which is currently a key competitive advantage in terms of location choice by foreign investors. Turning to the sea is one of the basic assumptions of our activities for the next few years – declares Mikolaj Trunin, Deputy Director, Invest in Pomerania. Pomeranian Voivodeship Marshal Mieczysław Struk is of a similar opinion, seeing offshore engineering projects as a completely new development path for the region. The Krakow hub marks Zilch's third global location, complementing the company's London headquarters in the UK and its Miami office in the US. With over 30% of Zilch's software engineers based in Krakow, the technology hub is poised for further expansion over the next two years. This growth will leverage Poland's thriving economy, its renowned business services sector, and a local labour market boasting a vast pool of highly skilled technology specialists.
Under the leadership of Zilch's CTO, Sean Hederman, the Krakow team will collaborate closely with the core engineering centre in the UK, setting the stage for the establishment of additional technology hubs worldwide to sustain Zilch's continued growth trajectory. This investment in Zilch's core product development capabilities aligns seamlessly with the company's strategic focus, which has propelled Zilch to over 3 million registered customers in record time. Philip Belamant, CEO and Co-Founder of Zilch, stated, "The current global macroeconomic climate has led to a marked increase in financial exclusion for customers and a significant reduction in funding for private firms. This creates an environment where well-funded, economically viable and highly scalable companies like Zilch can leapfrog the competition while delivering immense value to the mass market customer. While others are scaling back, we are doubling down on investment into our team, product, and customers. This strategic step is part of our targeted investment program into R&D and technology. We expect our new Krakow operation will serve as a blueprint for similar technology hubs worldwide." On July 26, in Rzeszów, Sherwin-Williams held its opening ceremony of its new office.
Sherwin-Williams is the leader in the US sector of paints, industrial varnishes and coating products. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Management Board of Sherwin-Williams from the United States, as well as the authorities of the city of Rzeszów. The new Sherwin-Williams Shared Service is located in the SkyRes Warszawska office building. In the first phase of operation and development in Rzeszów, the company plans to hire 100 employees. The Rzeszów Branch will support the company's operations on the American market in the implementation of a wide range of business processes. Sherwin-Williams operates globally with numerous factories and distribution centers around the world. The company was founded in Cleveland, USA in 1866. It produces top-class products for the aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding industries, and has specialized series of products dedicated to the general heavy industry, the wood industry and the packaging industry. In Poland, it has a production plant in Głuchów near Poznań and a sales branch in Dębica. Safran Aircraft Engines announced in May its opening of a new research and development center in Rzeszow in Poland.
This new R&D Center will be used to develop new architectures and new components for aircraft engines. ✈️ “Establishing the new Research and Development Center is yet another developmental milestone for Safran Aircraft Engines Poland. We are building a center of modern technological thought, and it will allow us to support the innovation effort made by Safran. David Rignault, General Manager of Safran Aircraft Engines Poland, said. With 30 employees today, this new R&D center is expecting for 250 engineers in 2027. Opened in 2018, Safran Aircraft Engines Poland is one of the key players involved in the ramp up performance by producing 550.000 turbine blades annually. The establishment of the new office, which will accommodate the Engineering and Technological Center, marks another step forward for Boeing in the region and follows its decision in 2022 to relocate its distribution centre on Załęska Street in Rzeszów to a larger building at Panattoni Park Rzeszów Airport III. This move will allow the company to store more than twice as many components for the military and civil aviation sectors. Cushman & Wakefield advised Boeing on this transaction as well.
“Eastern Poland undeniably continues to see business growth, which is a particularly positive development in the current geopolitical situation. This region boasts an increasing level of professionalization in terms of comprehensive investor support, among other things. Cushman & Wakefield was also the first real estate advisory agency to build a presence in eastern Poland. And ever since we opened our office in Lublin in 2017, we have been consistently expanding our services to better assist investors in their search for prime business locations,” comments Michał Galimski, Head of Regional Markets, Cushman & Wakefield. Boeing, a leading global aerospace company, has leased close to 6,600 sqm in the SkyRes building in Rzeszów. This represents the largest transaction in terms of square meters on the Rzeszów office market to date. Boeing was advised during its search for the optimal location and lease negotiations by Cushman & Wakefield. “We were looking for a modern, central and attractive location to accommodate our local teams. With Cushman & Wakefield’s advice, we found the building that fits our need perfectly within a short timeframe”, said David Packer, Boeing Global Real Estate Manager. “I am very pleased that another global aviation industry leader decided to make such a significant investment in Rzeszów. It is extremely encouraging to see that our city is becoming increasingly attractive for international tech companies, not only in terms of the potential for modern production processes or advanced research and development but also in the context of specialized business services dedicated to innovative sectors of the global economy. I would like to thank Boeing for the trust it placed in our city and I guarantee that we will provide it with all the necessary assistance at every stage of its operations in Rzeszów,” says Konrad Fijołek, Mayor of Rzeszów. The 14-floor SkyRes building is the first large class A office building on the local market. It offers a prime location in the city centre and fast connections to the airport and motorway. After numerous consultations, the final decision fell on Warsaw. This is another investment for the company in the capital. In 2018, Equinix, with the support of PAIH, chose Warsaw as the location of its data centre in Poland.
The Polish Investment and Trade Agency closely cooperated with the investor and actively supported the location selection process by providing market data, sector analyses and organizing location visits. The new Global Business Services centre will provide financial, HR, legal and software engineering services. As a result, over the next few years, up to 300-400 new jobs for highly educated specialists will be created. Equinix's decision to choose Warsaw as the location of their new GBS centre in Europe confirms the trend that the number of foreign investments in our country, especially in the BSS sector, is growing year by year. It also shows that Poland, due to its innovation and large pool of talent, is an attractive and valued business location on the global investment map - said Marcin Fabianowicz, Director of PAIH‘s Investment Department. About Equnix Inc Equinix is a global digital infrastructure company with a presence in 27 countries. The company is on a path of intensive growth, employing more than 12,000 people worldwide. The new investment in Poland is part of its long-term development strategy. These entities contribute to the performance of their parent companies, as well as that of the economy of the region at an increasing rate – as concluded by Deloitte in its latest study.
According to the study Deloitte conducted together with ABSL Hungary (Association of Business Service Leaders in Hungary), the role of these companies becomes even more prominent in the current economic environment, and Hungarian centers outperform their regional competitors on average. Service centers in the region have seen spectacular growth over the last 20 years, according to Deloitte's first-ever study specifically assessing the maturity of business services centers in Central Europe. The findings apply to virtually all the countries surveyed (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary). In addition, in the current ever-changing economic environment, the role of business services centers has become even more important as a means of improving operational efficiency, ensuring high service quality and innovation, thus contributing to increasing companies' competitive advantage. Central Europe has become a key location for service centers, mainly because of its favorable business environment, skilled workforce, and cost-efficiency. At the same time, the Global Business Services (GBS) sector has become indispensable throughout the European Union, accounting for 11% of the EU's GDP. The good news for Hungary is that the average maturity index of Hungarian business services centers is above the regional average: according to Deloitte’s survey, more than half of the business service centers operating in Hungary are already at a maturing stage of development, with two of them already in the top category. According to Eszter Lukács, director of GBS Consulting at Deloitte, this shows that the development potential of Hungarian centers is very good. “Proactive growth strategies, conscious planning, and continuous development are needed to enable service centers to further increase their added value and contribute to the business performance of their parent companies, thus further strengthening the role of Central Europe's economy among GBS locations," she concluded. As in Central Europe, the business service providers surveyed are the most advanced in work delivery management and the least mature in the organizational dimension, setting the main direction for GBS managers. The analysis also provides a benchmark for companies to assess their performance against industry standards and identify potential areas for improvement. The results of the study show that most business services centers in the region are currently in the performing or maturing category, i.e. they are clearly moving up the development pathway. According to respondents, centers are paying particular attention to talent development and technological advances, and are at the forefront of supporting and developing remote working, for example. This makes them important catalysts for the region's economy in these areas, such as talent acquisition and the adaptation of innovative technologies. “From a people strategy perspective, mature centers are also seen as ‘engines’ of future talents to business with unique technology capabilities and e2e process knowledge with a closer understanding of business," said Gábor Illés, head of Syngenta business services center, which participated in the research. He added that above-average service centers not only contribute but are at the forefront of developing and implementing initiatives that benefit their parent companies.
